Increasing Prominence

A variety of methods can increase the prominence of a web page within the search results.  Cross linking between pages of the same website to provide more links to most important pages may improve its visibility.  Writing content that includes frequently searched keyword phrase, so as to be relevant to a wide variety of search queries will tend to increase traffic.  Updating content so as to keep search engines crawling back frequently can give additional weight to a site.  Adding relevant keywords to a web page's meta data, including the title tag and meta description, will tend to improve the relevancy of a site's search listings, thus increasing traffic.  URL normalization of web pages accessible via multiple urls, using the "canonical" meta tag or via 301 redirects can help make sure links to different versions of the URL all count towards the page's link popularity score.          -- Wikipedia.

Increase Your Website's Prominence

Meta Data

Currently, there exists an argument as to how important meta data is, in the latest algorithms generated by the various search engines.  We feel that there will always be some importance in this area and that websites need to address this issue.

Every major web page should have it's own unique meta title, description & keywords that describe what that page is all about.  This is tedious and nit-picky work, but we still feel that it will pay off in the long term.

Link Building

Back links have been previously discussed and can be expounded upon here.  Building links into your community that you are trying to serve is critical to the success of your website.  This takes consistent attention and time.  The more inward links that you gather, and we also feel, outward links that you give, the better off your sites page rank will become over time.

Here are a couple of our link building and / or information gathering secrets.

BuiltWith is a web site profiler tool.  Upon looking up a page, BuiltWith returns all the technologies it can find on that page.  BuiltWith's goal is to help developers, researchers and designers find out what technologies websites are using.  BuiltWith technology tracking includes widgets, analytics, frameworks, publishing platforms, advertising, CDNs, standards (XHTML,RSS) and web servers (Apache, IIS, CentOS, Debian) to name the categories.  Their products include TrendsPro, a lead generation, competitive analysis and business intelligence tool providing technology adoption and usage analytics for over 147 million websites and a Website Optimizer, providing website owners with SEO recommendations and web monitoring tools.  BuiltWith is based in Sydney, Australia and was founded in July 2007.  They will also give you an inbound link during their processes.

Although yet to provide us with a back link, Hubspot's Marketing Grader provides us with a plethora of free information.  Learn how well you are doing across 3 critical areas of your marketing.  Top of the Funnel.  Are you doing enough to bring visitors to your website and fill the top of your sales and marketing funnel ?  How are your content creation, optimization and website promotion skills ?  Middle of the Funnel.  How do you do when it comes to converting traffic into leads and leads into customers ?  Do your landing pages, conversion forms, email marketing and social media efforts compare ?  And Analytics.  Do you know what marketing activities are working ( or aren't working ) ?  Do you measure your successes and failures ?  HubSpot's all-in-one marketing software helps more than 6,000 companies in 45 countries attract leads and convert them into customers.  A pioneer in inbound marketing, HubSpot aims to help its customers make marketing that people actually love.

Say Thank You !

Providing outward links ( we just provided 3 above ) are a very nice way of saying thank you to those who have provided you with their products ( especially if they are free ), their expertise or have become a source of inspiration for your website.  It is a great way for you to give back to your immediate Internet community as a whole.  You are helping their search rankings, therefore, helping their business be more successful.  Is there any better way to say thank you than that ?  Who knows, they may reciprocate and link to your site someday.  Be a good neighbor and maybe increase your Karma in the process.

Get Social

Get your business seen by using the huge and expanding social networking avenues that are available.  This is another no brainer.  Be seen and get seen.  Get your business face into the community that you wish to market.

There are a bunch of these social networks.  Start with Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google+, in no particular order, and then expand from there.  These social links will turn into business and eventually back links for your website also.

Make friends, as friends can become clients, and vice versa.  And even better yet, your friends know folks who are not your friends -- yet !  Word of mouth is still the best advertising that exists.
