WordPress

WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and a content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL, which runs on a web hosting service.  Features include a plugin architecture and a template system.  WordPress is used by more than 22.0% of the top 10 million websites as of August 2013.  WordPress is the most popular blogging system in use on the Web, at more than 60 million websites.

It was first released on May 27, 2003 and as of February 19, 2014, version 3.8 had been downloaded more than 20 million times.     -- Wikipedia

And more from WordPress themselves ...wordpress-logo

WordPress started in 2003.  Since then it has grown to be the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world, used on millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day.

WordPress is an Open Source project, which means there are hundreds of people all over the world working on it.  (More than most commercial platforms.)  It also means you are free to use it for anything from your cat’s home page to a Fortune 500 web site without paying anyone a license fee and a number of other important freedoms.

WordPress started as just a blogging system, but has evolved to be used as full content management system and so much more through the thousands of plugins, widgets, and themes, WordPress is limited only by your imagination. (And tech chops.)

At RE:, we are WordPress.org consulants.  We are also active members of the Arizona WordPress Group.

RE: works with the WordPress blogging tool because of it's extreme popularity with the lay person and there are many existing websites that utilize it.  It is very simple to use and understand and works well for website blogs and other simple websites.

However, WordPress was conceived as a blogging tool and they like it that way.  WordPress was built for the non-technically minded.  It is a blogging tool that can be turned into a CMS, eventhough sometimes with much effort.  In RE:'s opinion, it is not as flexible or powerful as is Joomla! or another true WCMS software.

As of 16 April 2014, WordPress 3.9.1 is the latest stable version that one should be upgraded to.
