RE: Joomla! Upgrading

Joomla! Upgrading / Updating

The term upgrade refers to the replacement of a product with a newer version of the same product.  It is most often used in computing and consumer electronics, generally meaning a replacement of hardware, software; or firmware; with a newer or better version, in order to bring the system up to date or to improve its characteristics.

Common software upgrades include changing the version of an operating systemoffice suite, anti-virus program, or various other tools.

Common firmware upgrades include the updating of the iPod control menus, the Xbox 360 dashboard, or the non-volatile flash memory that contains the embedded operating system for a consumer electronics device.

Users can often download software and firmware upgrades from the Internet.  Often the download is a patch -- it does not contain the new version of the software in its entirety, just the changes that need to be made.  Software patches usually aim to improve functionality or solve problems with security.  Patches are generally free.

A software or firmware upgrade can be major or minor and the release version code-number increases accordingly.  A major upgrade will change the version number, whereas a minor update will often append a ".01", ".02", ".03", etc.  For example, "version 10.03" might designate the third minor upgrade of version 10.  In commercial software, the minor upgrades (or updates) are generally free, but the major versions must be purchased.

When one replaces a product made by one supplier with a product made by a different supplier, one carries out "competitive upgrade".     -- Wikipedia.

Why Upgrade ?

If it ain't broke, why fix it ?  Software is similar to a pair of often worn tennis shoes.  Over time, they become old, dreary, and eventually, it is just time to get a new pair.  There are several reasons why software does require to be upgraded on a periodic basis.

Hacker Animation ImageSecurity

This is the #1 reason to upgrade.  HACKERS !  The security of software is in constant revolution.  The older your software is, the more likely that a nayer-do-well can mess it up.  Software developers are always coming up with better systems to defeat any attempts to compromise their wonderful products.  Over the next decades, this will be the number one computing subject.  You will be hearing the terms, "cyber warfare" and "access control", on the news.  Count on it !

Would you want your website to get "hacked" just because you didn't properly upgrade it ?

Everyone with a website should be doing three things religiously.  Backing up their website on a quarterly basis at a minimum, utilizing complex, strong passwords and upgrading their website software when necessary.  If you are not, your website might as well be playing Russian roulette.  Or should we maybe say, Chinese roulette ?  Everyone knows and talks about these three things.  Few actually do them.

Please read this article.  And here is the link to the Joomla! Security Checklist.  Upgrade !

Bugs

Software Bugs.  Human beings make mistakes.  It is one of the best things that we do.  No matter how hard we try not to, mistakes are unavoidable.  For some of us, mistakes are how we learn -- trial and error.  Lots of science evolves that way.  Scientists call them experiments.

When software developers find or are made aware of problems with what they have designed, they make fixes to their programs.  Some of these fixes are major, others not.  Bugs are prevalent in software and are also constantly fixed.  Upgrade !

New Features

Additions.  This is a major reason to update your CMS.  The people at the Joomla! project are always trying to make it better and routinely add items into the base software.  How many times have your heard the statement, "change is good".  Upgrade !

Better Functionality

This would be a very valid reason to upgrade to Joomla! 3.x after November 6, 2013.  3.3.6 is the latest version of a major look & feel upgrade to make the Joomla! CMS more mobile friendly.  Everything is headed toward the Mobile revolution.  The Joomla! software is no different.  Upgrade !

Customer SupportJoomla 2.5 Image

Old software is only supported by it's developers for so long.  Here is the current situation for the support of the Joomla! project, straight from the developers mouth ( with revisions as RE: becomes aware of them ) ...

"Joomla! 1.0 reached end-of-life on 22 July 2009 and is no longer supported.  If you are still running Joomla! 1.0 you are three major versions out-of-date and a complex migration is required.  There is no direct migration from Joomla! 1.0.x to Joomla! 3.3.6.  Instead you will need to first migrate your site to Joomla! 1.5.25, then perform a second migration to 2.5.28 and then a third migration to 3.3.6."

"Joomla! 1.5 was a long-term support release, has reached end-of-life in September 2012 and is no longer supported.  Upgrading to Joomla! 3.3.6 should follow the same steps as described above."

"Joomla! 1.6 was a short-term support release, has reached end-of-life on 19 August 2011 and is no longer supported.  Updating to 3.3.6 should be straightforward if you are currently on 1.6.5 or 1.6.6 using the two migrations above."

"Joomla! 1.7 was a short-term support release, has reached end-of-life on 24 February 2012 and is no longer supported.  Upgrading to 3.3.6 should be straightforward also as above."

As of September 2012, all of the above Joomla! software is no longer supported by the Joomla! project.  Upgrade !

In addition to the out of date software above, Joomla! 3.0.x, 3.1.x and 3.2.x are all short-term support versions, and were supported only until May 2013, December 2013 and April 2014, respectively.  It is now time to migrate into 3.3.6.

However, RE: has built several new websites that are currently running Joomla! 3.x -- and we LOVE it !!  It is still pretty new, and there are some glitches that we have found, but, we are excited with the future direction of the Joomla! project.

Please read this Joomla! 3.0 FAQ for more information about upgrading from 2.5.x.  Upgrading from earlier versions is even more complex as described above.

Joomla! 3.0 Get ReadyOur Recommendation

If your site runs an older version than 3.3.6, you need to upgrade to it, even if just for security reasons alone.

We are building all of our new clients websites in 3.3.6, if possible.
